Guard Your Witness

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. (Ephesians 5:3, 4)

Dear Father,

Since we are no longer under law, other than the Law of Christ, you no longer give us a list of do's and don'ts for their own right. Rather, by seeking to love others as you have loved us, we choose to do things, and choose not to do things, which will show love to those around us. No doubt scripture tells us that some things are wrong -but they are wrong because they fail to show love to those you have given us to love.

In this scripture we are told that certain actions "are improper for God's holy people" and "are out of place". By that, we are being told that we have an obligation, out of love for the lost, to behave in a way that is appropriate for our calling. I pray these children bear always in mind the impact of their actions. The non-Christian may feel quite right in their own behavior, but they would be put off if they observe a Christian doing the same thing - calling them hypocrites. Help these children to see that walking the edge of behavior that is "improper for God's holy people", hurts their witness to the world and weakens their ability to be that light shining in the darkness.

Amen
