Walking in the Light

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (I John 1:7-10)

Father of Grace and Mercy,

These verses are my favorite. I pray these children understand their deep and glorious meaning. I pray the understand that by these verses 1) our purification from all sin means that the forgiveness we receive is moment by moment, continuous and 2) by definition sinning and walking in the light can co-exist. Continual cleansing - salvation - happens non-stop as we walk in the light, all the while we continually fail and sin. If we confess that we are sinful, you forgive us.

Help them to realize that "walking in the light" as defined in chapter 2 of I John, is loving your brothers and sisters in Christ. They will not do this perfectly either, but help them to realize that their focus should always be on how they treat people, for that is walking in the light - which gives them continual forgiveness of their sins.

Amen
